Heirloom Clothing Guide & Session Preparation

Heirloom vignettes are designed to capture your child’s sweet expressions and pure personality with timeless style at heart. Because these portraits focus tightly on the face and shoulders, the neckline and fabric textures of the clothing are the most important elements of the wardrobe.

1. The Golden Rules of Heirloom Styling

- Think Timeless, Not Trendy: Choose classic pieces that could belong to almost any decade. Simplicity found in whites, creams, and soft pastels are gold standard.

- Keep the Focus on the Face: High collars, delicate necklines, and soft framing textures work beautifully. Avoid distracting, busy patterns or neon colors that cast unnatural tones on the skin.

- Prioritize Proper Fit: Clothing should fit well. Overly large clothing or gaping necklines will bunch up when your child sits, distracting from their face.

2. Recommended Clothing Styles by Age & Gender

For Girls

Traditional silhouettes with delicate details near the face frame a vignette beautifully. Pair with a dainty grosgrain or satin bow.

- Classic Smocked Dresses: Bishop-style dresses or yoke dresses with soft, hand-smocked details across the chest and collar. Smocked or collared bubbles work well for babies or toddlers too.

- Heirloom Necklines: Look for Peter Pan collars, delicate scalloped edges, lace detailing, or Swiss dot fabrics.

- Sleeveless or Short Puffed Sleeves: These keep the shoulders clean and rounded within the traditional oval crop. Long sleeved dresses may work nicely for winter or Christmas photos.

For Boys

Clean, tailored lines look exceptionally sharp in classic heirloom portraiture.

- Peter Pan Collar and Traditional Collar Shirts: A crisp white or pastel button-back shirt with a rounded Peter Pan collar is a classic choice. Traditional short-sleeve or long-sleeve collar shirts also work well for a simple and traditional look. Pair with khaki or white pants or shorts to coordinate.

- Classic Smocking: Button-on suits or rompers with light geometric smocking across the chest.

- Shorts Suits & Rompers: For toddlers and younger boys, one-piece rompers or traditional Eton collar shirts work perfectly.

3. The Color Palette

Because heirloom photography uses a white background, pastel, neutral, and light tones create the most cohesive aesthetic.

Recommended Tones

Why It Works

Monochrome Crisp White / Ivory

The ultimate classic look. It creates a bright and clean contrast reflecting beautiful light onto the face.

Soft Pastels

Pale blue, heirloom pink, mint green, soft lavender, and buttercup yellow add a gentle hint of color without dominating the portrait.

Classic Navy or True Red

For a slightly bolder, regal look. Best used on piped trim or traditional holiday heirloom clothing.

Colors to Avoid: Neon shades, bright orange, hot pink, and heavy black. These colors can reflect unnatural tints onto your child's chin and cheeks under studio lights.

4. Textures & Fabrics Over Patterns

In heirloom portraiture, texture replaces pattern. Heavy prints (like large plaids, bold florals, or stripes) draw the eye away from your child. Instead, look for beautiful, high-quality fabrics that catch the light softly:

- Fine Linens & Pima Cottons

- Piqué & Seersucker

- Delicate Lace, Eyelet, or Monogramming

5. Preparing for Your Session: A Quick Checklist

- Steam or Iron the Night Before: Heirloom studio lighting captures fine details, which means it will also capture deep creases. Please ensure all collars and pleats are freshly pressed.

- Check Undergarments: For younger children in rompers or short dresses, use a matching diaper cover or bloomers. Ensure diaper or underwear patterns are not visible (white diapers or diaper covers recommended!)

- Hair: Keep hair neat, classic, and out of the eyes. Avoid large, oversized bows that compete with the size of your child's head; instead, opt for smaller, dainty bows or classic barrettes that pull hair back cleanly.

- Bring an Extra Outfit (Just in Case): If you are traveling to the studio with a baby or young toddler, dress them in casual clothes for the car ride and change them into their heirloom attire upon arrival to avoid car seat wrinkles or accidental spit-ups.
